“Starry SoCal” at Richstone

“Starry SoCal” at Richstone

Friends of Redondo Beach Arts supports the work of eight docents who travel monthly to the Richstone Center in Hawthorne to present Hands On Art projects for their K – 8 after school program.  Students learn art history and are able to experience a variety of art media.

This month’s project, “Starry SoCal,” was based on  Van Gogh’s iconic painting, “Starry Night.”  The SoCal comes to play by replacing the cypress tree and village with a palm tree and a lifeguard tower.  Not only did students hear about the art and life of Vincent Van Gogh, they learned to imitate his impasto brushstrokes and style of painting.  They used acrylic paint and novagel to give the feeling of texture and movement in their artwork.  They learned about composition showing foreground, middle ground and background.  Hands on Art thanks Stephanie Kohler for this project.
