Richstone Students Experience Sumi-E
Friends of Redondo Beach Arts supports the work of eight docents who travel monthly to the Richstone Center in Hawthorne to present Hands On Art projects for their after school program. Students learn art history and are able to experience a variety of art media.
The project for March was adapted from the meditative style of the Japanese Masters. Students created a brushstroke painting using the Japanese Sumi Ink and Brush on Rice Paper. Students were able to grind their own ink using Sumi (the ink) and a Suzuri (the inkwell). The brush, or Fude has a very specific shape that helps to create the desired brushstrokes. Often Haiku is incorporated with the Sumi-E.
